A Foundation of FEAR by Kim McMahill
FBI Special Agent Devyn Nash is obsessed with taking down Coterie, a deadly group out to control the multi-billion-ollar diet product industry. The FBI’s plan to expose Coterie places Devyn’s best friend and her partner’s fiancé in the crosshairs of this ruthless organization. Can Devyn protect her friend and bring the coldblooded killers to justice before they strike again while distracted by injury, a sexist bully, and a long-distance relationship with a handsome Wyoming sheriff?
Lobbyist and Coterie assassin Sofia Wilks wants nothing more than to regain control of her life. Sofia knows Agent Nash is nipping at her heels, but the FBI agent isn’t the worst of her fears. She is drawn to a man who has the power to destroy her.
A Taste of A Foundation of Fear
Easing herself up from the sofa, Devyn shuffled into the kitchen, opened the freezer, and pulled out a pint of half-eaten chocolate peanut butter swirl ice cream. She grabbed a spoon and dug in as she leaned back against the kitchen counter, savoring each delicious bite.
She had nearly made it to the bottom when the phone rang. She groaned and thought about letting it ring, but if it was Gage, he was definitely worth an interruption in her ice cream eating.
Hello.”
“What are you up to?” His deep voice eased over her like a warm caress.
She smiled and placed the ice cream carton in the kitchen sink.
“I’d love to relay something exciting or noteworthy, but the truth of the matter is that I’m standing here in my kitchen eating ice cream out of the container. What are you doing?”
He laughed. The sound made her weak in the knees. She didn’t know why he had that effect on her, but she finally decided to quit fighting it and enjoy exploring new territory.
“I’m sitting here on the front porch swing, drinking a beer, watching a beautiful Wyoming sunset sink toward the horizon and thinking the only thing in the world that could make it better was if you were here to share it with me.”
Devyn couldn’t speak. She was used to the way Gardner talked to her at work and the rude and insulting comments from the criminals she busted, but Gage was the first man to ever say kind and romantic things to her.
“You still there?”
“Yes. I was just trying to decide if you’ve had too many beers, because that’s the sweetest thing any man has ever said to me.”
“Nope, first one. How are you doing? Aches and pains getting any better?”
“I must be getting old. This isn’t the first time I’ve cracked my ribs, but I don’t remember it hurting so much or taking this long to heal.”
“Wish I could have stayed longer to take care of you.”
“I wish you could have stayed longer, too, but I had a few ideas in mind other than you making me soup.”
There it was again, that rich laughter that made her want to crawl into his lap and run her fingers through his unruly hair and caress his freshly shaven face before capturing his lips in a seductive kiss.
“I have to confess. My intentions weren’t quite so honorable when I started driving toward Utah, but when I saw how beaten up you were, I just wanted to make your pain go away.”
Devyn thought she might cry. Plenty of co-workers and criminals wanted to cause her pain, but no one had ever wanted to take it away
