The Rake and the Bishop’s Daughter–A Regency Romance

Society’s beloved wastrel, Sir Harry Collyns, pushes his popularity Regency Romance book cover for The Rake and the Bishop's Daughter by Julia Donnerpast the point of acceptability when he poses for a statue that creates a social uproar. People line up for blocks to see Handsome Harry in the nude, sculpted by a female artist! Bored with the fuss and scandal, Harry hitches up his fastest team, heads for the country, and a near fatal curricle accident. When the bandages are removed from his head days later, he discovers the angel-voiced widow who’d cared for him is neither elderly nor as mild as her tone, but a straight-laced do-gooder unimpressed with his flamboyant past and dashing good looks. Head-battered and heading for a broken heart, he falls into love with Widow Olivia St. Clair, who might be the one woman in England that Harry can’t charm into loving him back.

An EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

Dreading what Quentin Goodfall’s appearance could mean, Olivia hesitated before opening the front door. She took a fortifying breath and grasped the latch.

He stood on the doorstep—had planted himself more like—and wasn’t the type to be thwarted once he’d gotten a notion in his head. Stocky, beetle-browed, but not unhandsome, her former suitor scowled at her with faded-blue eyes. She couldn’t stop the comparison to Harry’s startling gaze, his golden beauty in contrast to Quentin, a staid, uncharitable lump.

Dressed with all the panache of a pig farmer, and looking as determined as a boxer taking a stance, Quentin muttered, “I won’t be put off, Olivia. I must come in and speak to you.”

Olivia’s hands curled into fists inside her apron pockets. The wretch would stand there until he got his way, so she silently complied by leaving the door open and going into the nearby receiving room. She noticed the window standing open. Harry’s room was directly overhead and she prayed that he’d gone back to bed and wouldn’t hear the confrontation about to happen. If Quentin discovered that she had a male guest in residence, she didn’t want to imagine the dimensions of the uproar.

When Fanny attempted to scoot inside the parlour door, Quentin shut it in her face. Olivia backed up when he advanced. He came across the room with swift purpose, his bulk looming large and intimidating. She stiffened her back, ready for a fight.

Get to Know Author Julia Donner

Julia Donner (aka M.L.Rigdon) grew up in historic Galena, IL, USA, and spent most of her time in the museum of her aunt, who encouraged her interest in history and understood the need to cherish a dream. Donner never forgot what it was like to write alone as a girl and is a happy member of Summit City Scribes. Concern for the failing educational system led her to develop Your Futures in Ink, a panel of local and regional authors, who go into to schools to encourage students and answer questions about writing.
