Paranormal Mystery-End of the Road by Karen Michelle Nutt

The ghost of a dead rock star haunts the pages of this paranormal mystery. How did he die and how can his daughter help him find peace?

We love a good mystery in Sorchia’s Universe, and if it involves a ghost–so much the better. As part of this review tour for End of the Road, sponsored by Goddess Fish, I will again attempt to write a review. so there’s that.

More importantly, the author is offering a $20 gift card AND the book is on sale for .99 during the tour. Be sure to check out other tour posts to increase you chances of winning.

End of the Road–A Paranormal Mystery

Lars Gunner, the frontman for Silent Plaids, died 23 years ago and his death was ruled an unfortunate accident. Despite the fact he can’t recall what happened to him in his last moments of life, he is convinced he was murdered. He has been trapped in limbo until his daughter, Cecilia, unearths his journal and is able to see him. She seeks help from Kaleb, a psychic, but as they resurrect the past, the secrets and lies surrounding Lars’ rock and roll life just may be the death of them too.

A Spooky Preview of this Paranormal Mystery

(Cecilia found her father’s journal and a message is revealed.)

She stared at the book and wondered what she should do with it. Should she give it to her mother?

She fixed the floorboard, and then stood to put the last guitar in its place. She took the journal with her and stepped out of the closet and closed the door behind her. She glanced at the book in her hand. She’d be lying if she weren’t just a tad curious to know what her father had written. Maybe after she read it and made sure there wasn’t anything in it that would upset her mother, she’d give it to her. God knew her mother didn’t need anything else to obsess about in regards to her father.

She placed the journal on the desk but as she turned a loud slap against the wood floor had her whirling around with a gasp. She found the journal had fallen and lay at her feet, opened to a page where a slip of paper rested within the crease. She leaned down and reached for the note and unfolded it. The first lines jumped out at her, making her feel dizzy and a little queasy as if she’d indulged in her mother’s stash. She stood and read the lines again.

I don’t fear the reaper. It’s the humans with death in their eyes that scare me shitless. If you’re reading this, death found me when my back was turned.

My review:

An enjoyable read with some spooky atmosphere and a mystery for our heroine to solve.

Cons—A bit wordy. Some of my triggers were pulled—‘had’ too many times; ‘and then’ too many times; often unclear pronoun references. That kind of thing. Nothing egregious, but my English teacher spider instincts tingled a bit.

I didn’t really connect with Cecelia –but that might just be me. At a young age, she loses her father and she’s stuck with a dysfunctional mother who grieves his death for twenty-three years. She’s plucky and she’s motivated. We do jump povs a few times which might have distanced me. I’m a bit of a purist and prefer a limited pov so I can really get involved with the inner workings of the character.

Pros

Great story idea!  The idea hits me in the feels. When a rock legend dies under any circumstances, urban myths flourish. Is he really dead or is he working as a CIA operative in the Mideast? Did he get put in Witness Protection after he turned on a drug cartel?  Was he abducted by aliens? Was it murder? This tale takes the rumors to the next level.

An optimistic tone. While the subject matter—murder, death, betrayal, dysfunction—are not the most upbeat, the tone is one of hope and love and optimism. Just the presence of a ghost hints at an afterlife and I like the author’s take on that subject—but I can’t give away too much. So many modern books take a pessimistic or depressing tone with a bleak outlook on the present and an even worse forecast for the future. End of the Road doesn’t do that.

I can cheerfully give this book a 4 out of 5 stars. I  recommend it to anyone who enjoys a little chill and a lot of mystery.
