Vampires and Immortality

The concept of vampires is an ancient one. Many cultures in the world have legends about blood drinkers or energy-draining demons who visit unsuspecting people in the night. Vampires are fearsome, but they also have an undeniable appeal that continues to fascinate us.
Depending on the fictional world, vampires have different powers, but they share some common traits. First and foremost, they drain something, whether they’re traditional blood-drinking vampires or psychic vampires that feed on energy, they survive by taking a bit of life from others. Most vampires, even ones who are described as horrifying, have a hypnotic hold over people. We’re fascinated by vampires and that fascination has stood the test of time. Many present-day vampire stories are quite different from ones of the past. Now, it’s as easy to find vampire heroes as villains. Instead of always portrayed as demons or “undead,” in some fictional worlds vampires might be an alien species.
Despite their basic common traits, vampires are constantly evolving, which ensures that even if some fictional vampires have a shorter lifespan than others, the concept of vampires is surely immortal.

Adrian – I am a vampire whose physical ugliness intensified with my immortality. For centuries I hunted alone, disguising myself from prey, preferring illusions to brutal attacks. Others of my kind spurned me. Some tried to destroy me, and on them I unleashed my wrath. I suffered the agony of eternal loneliness, and then I met Anna.
Anna – My life was almost unbearable until a tall, black-haired stranger with fiery eyes and needle-sharp teeth drank my blood and swept me into an unimaginable world. From the night we met, I gave Adrian my heart, but a lie spun by a jealous enemy drove us apart. I swore I would never give him the chance to hurt me again, but denying my love for him was harder than I thought.
Excerpt from Through My Heart
Adrian gritted his teeth, clenched his fist, and stepped toward Andrei. I stood in front of Adrian and splayed my hands across his chest. “Don’t. Hasn’t there been enough violence between you?”
“I think there has,” Andrei said. “I don’t want to fight you, Adrian. We don’t have to be friends, but we are brothers through Crina’s bite. She gave us immortality so that we could have a new and better life. We repaid her with anger and vengeance. We tried to destroy each other. The past is gone, but we still have a future. We have a maker who still cares for us, and you have Anna.”
“Do I? Because of your friend Alexandru, I lost the only person who has ever loved me. Why am I telling you this? You’re my—”
“Brother. Admit it. After Crina changed us, we learned and grew together. We could have appreciated what we had, but here,” he tapped a finger to his temple, “we were still on the battlefield. At least I know I was, and until I allowed myself to leave it in the past, I festered with anger and hatred. I regret killing. I wish things could have been different for both our people, but I can’t change it. I don’t want to spent eternity fighting you.”
Adrian studied him in silence for a moment. Then he turned his gaze to me. Cupping my chin, he smiled slightly. “Is there another chance for us?”

Oh, and lately I’ve been wanting to watch The Lost Boys again. I loved it when it first came out and want to see if it has aged well–for me, at least. What do the rest of you recommend for vampire movies?
