OK. I admit that my Halloween decorations have been up since August (and they’ll stay up until February—sue me!) My to-read list for the next month is filled with witches and ghosts and all manner of wonderful magic! Let’s face it—Reality bites right now.
But while there are books, there is hope, right? The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna is the perfect start to this season, the perfect escape, and a perfectly charming tale of finding your place in a world where some would condemn you for being different.
🌟🌈 Tarot Pairing: The Star + Ten of Cups 🌈🌟
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches shimmers with the hopefulness and joy of The Star and the warm, happy home of the Ten of Cups. Like The Star, Mika steps out of isolation and learns to shine in her own truth. She puts into practice what she’s always believed: her magic is a gift to be shared, not hidden. The Ten of Cups illustrates the essence of Nowhere House—a found family where broken pieces come together. These cards capture the novel’s enchantment: a story of hope, belonging, and the kind of magic that makes a house into a home.
Present day. England.
Mika Moon is a fidgety witch. Her adoptive and overprotective aunt warns that magic should be kept quiet. No unauthorized spelling and no consorting with other witches. So the group meets once a year and maintains secrecy and isolation for the other 364.
I get that. Who needs a yard full of torch-bearing, pitchfork-wielding peasants, anyway? Been there: Done that! Zero stars.
But Mika is lonely, and a lifetime of hiding her true self has taken a toll on her self-esteem and on her love life.
Then comes a mysterious message. It seems there are three magical little girls—totally off Aunt Primrose‘s radar—who need education in the fine art of enchantment. This is so totally against the rules that Mika can’t stop herself from giving it a go.
She joins the unusual household at Nowhere House that offers her freedom, acceptance, and companionship she has never known.
This well-written story checks all the boxes. The characters are wonderfully drawn—I fell in love with the retired actor and his partner, and the caretaker, and most of all, the librarian, and, of course, the three little witches. But all is not well. Outsiders threaten the household’s anonymity. Mika may be their last hope, but they haven’t told her everything.
I’ve been looking forward to The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches for several reasons, not least of which is that it heralds a witchy spree here at Sorchia’s Universe. Stay tuned! More witches on the way!
