U is for Unite
I remember the 60s—barely, for I was a mere slip of a girl—as a time when the world seemed turned upside down. Riots, assassinations, and war were in the headlines. Even my little town felt the uncertainty of the times as they watched their young men shipped off to a war that the government didn’t seem to want to win. Then, there was Nixon and the betrayal of trust at the highest levels of our government.
But we made it. We stayed true, mostly, to what America should stand for. The Civil Rights movement made headway. Women got more rights. The never-ending war did eventually end. Nixon left office, and though Ford wasn’t perfect, he was an honest man. I think he should not have pardoned Nixon, but that’s a moot point now.
Time moved on, and the American flag began to mean something again. We flew it proudly on 9-11 to show our defiance and our unity.
Until the Tea Party and then MAGA began waving the flag for entirely the wrong reasons. They’re dime-store patriots at best, and it galls me that they use the American flag to promote fascism.
So I say we take it back. We are the United States. All of us together—even the misled and willfully ignorant who support the current regime. The flag is a rallying point, a symbol of what we strive to be.
As I’ve stated before, I am not a fan of ostentatious displays. I will never be seen on a street corner waving a giant flag and spouting party talking points. But I will put a flag on my car, right above the Proud Democrat sticker.
We’ve united around the flag before. Somehow, we’ve let the worst of us steal it. The flag—and the U.S.– deserves better. It belongs to all of us.
