Like my guest, I love to revisit the past and watch old movies. Over the summer, my son pushed a bunch of 50s and 60s sci-fi and horror. Even the bad ones are strangely good! And Vampires are ageless, right? Jump in the Not-So-Way-Back Machine and head for the 80s with my guest, Author Kate Hill, with her list of 80s vampire movies.
10 Vampire Movies from the 80s
by Kate Hill
While working on re-edits for the Immaculate, a vampire romance set in the late 1980s, I revisited the past. Things were different then—payphones instead of cell phones were common. Big hair, shoulder pads, and music videos were huge. Video games were nothing like games today. Back then, you couldn’t stream movies, and binge-watching a series wasn’t a thing. What did I do to get myself back into the 80s? Listened to music, watched movies, and looked at photos from those days. As a huge horror fan, I often watch old movies in the genre, so today, I would like to share my top ten vampire movies from the 1980s.
10. The Lost Boys – Young humans get into trouble with creatures that look like young humans. This was an entertaining vampire movie that was hugely popular back in the day.
9. The Hunger – A unique and dramatic take on vampirism featuring a female vampire and her relationships. This is a slow-paced but intriguing movie.
8. Salem’s Lot – An eerie story about a man revisiting his hometown that’s threatened by a sinister bloodsucker. There are two versions of this movie, a shorter one and a long length. Both are good, but I prefer the longer one.
7. Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat – What happens when a family moves into a town run by a vampire? Find out in this horror comedy.
6. Nick Knight – A detective struggles against his vampirism and the master who created him. This movie was the prelude to the 90s television show Forever Knight (one of my all-time favorite series).
5. Once Bitten – In this horror comedy, an attractive, wealthy vampiress must find a virgin to feed on or lose her illusion of agelessness.
4. Fright Night – A teenage horror fan suspects that his new neighbor is a vampire and enlists the help of an actor who plays a vampire hunter.
3. Fright Night 2 – The teen and the actor/vampire hunter from Fright Night are back battling vampires out for revenge in a sequel that was just as good as the first movie.
2. Vamp – College guys looking for a stripper end up in the most dangerous club in the city. This movie is a perfect combination of unsettling and humorous.
1. Dance of the Damned – A starving vampire and a suicidal stripper spend a night together, but only one will survive. It’s one of my favorite vampire movies from any era. It takes place in one night, but the character development is great.
The 80s had some fun horror movies that I often revisit. If you’re in the mood for an 80s vampire movie, you might want to try one of these.
My vampires in The Immaculate are different than many of the traditional vampires of the time or traditional vampires in general, but there’s still an 80s feel to the stories. If you’re an 80s horror or vampire fan, I’d love to know what movies you like best from the era and if any of the above choices make your list.
