Exercise and Energize 2 comments

Today is April 5–important to me because it is both my mom’s and my sister’s birthday. Mom crossed the Rainbow Bridge some years ago, but my sister is still causing trouble wherever she goes and this is a wonderful thing.

April 5 of this year of our lord 2025 is also important as a huge day of protest. As I write this, I’m watching Cory Booker filibuster and I’m encouraged. As I write, this is election day in Wisconsin and Florida. By the time this is posted, I’m hoping we find more to be happy about. If you are protesting, stay safe. The forces of evil won’t go down easy.

E is for Exercise and Energize

Exercise

Don’t look at me that way.

You already know why! You’re no good to anyone if you are glued to the ground–mentally, emotionally, and literally—if you can’t climb the stairs without risking a heart attack–if your brain is stuck and you can’t find a way to reboot it.

Exercise those old bones. Move those achy muscles. Get that cholesterol-thick blood flowing.

Get yourself on an exercise plan—no matter how mild—and stick with it.

Be reasonable—Rome wasn’t built in a day. Your pole-vaulting days may be over and the chances of being tagged to do a centerfold shoot for Playboy are slim, but you’ve got shit to do and unless you have the stamina to do that shit—that shit won’t get done.

Start where you are—if you can’t walk more than ten minutes, then walk ten minutes for a week. Then walk 11 minutes for the next week, and so on until you get to a level you think you can maintain.

Did you know that 20 minutes of exercise can trigger your natural painkilling endorphins? This is one fact I did not pull out of my ass– Exercise Increases Endorphins

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. If I were a doctor, I would be drinking better wine and wearing better shoes. So talk to a real doctor–you’ll know them by the wine and the shoes–and don’t launch an exercise program if you have health issues until the real doc gives you the official okey-dokey.

Energize

Lack of sleep or poor nutrition will sap your energy for sure. But Stress is the real culprit. Later in this series, we are going to explore ways to reduce the stress we are all feeling and the existential dread that seems to permeate the atmosphere. But the first step is to admit you have a problem. So here’s a little infographic to help you gauge the stress level you are experiencing. Delete the stress and watch the energy bounce back.

Exercise is nonnegotiable for me. It’s the only thing that keeps me sane, some days.

We’re getting rain all day today, too. We also had the dumb luck to buy a house on what we’ve been told is the highest spot in our suburb. I’m going to protest in the rain. As people in Minnesota say, there’s no bad weather, only poor clothing choices. So, I already pulled out appropriate clothing.

Just a note: today is a major weather day at my house with torrential rain and local flooding. I’m safe and dry because by dumb luck, we built our house on the side of a hill. My basement gets a little damp, but so far that’s the worst. This is the second 100-year flood in 7 years–what could it mean? (insert sarcasm emoji here) So I will be a bit scarce in replies and comments for a day or two while I keep the hatches battened and watch the deluge. The power may go out which will slow me down more, but I’ll be back asap! And, importantly, STAY SAFE and GODSPEED to everyone protesting today!
