It’s been a nasty, hot summer and the dog days bit me right where it hurts. I haven’t posted in a couple of months, but I’m baaaaaack.
And it’s one of my favorite times of the year—the countdown to Halloween. I’m already seeing loads of spooky, haunted, scary posts.

Best Laid Plans
They say you can trap a witch in a mirror. Catch her soul. They say. Break the mirror. They say. She’ll be imprisoned for ever. That’s what they say.
But mirrors work both ways. If you know the trick.
Which I do.
Across my floor, shards of glass reflect moonlight. Inside each one a tiny torch-bearing figure. Some pound the glass. They can’t believe what just happened. Some accept their fates quietly. They stare out at me with sad eyes. Hoping I will have mercy.
I broom them up and dump them in the recycle bin.
Will they never learn?

I like the deadpan, matter-of-fact quality of “I broom them up and dump them in the recycle bin” – I think witches would be quite matter-of-fact, really; they’ve seen too much to to waste time with any airy fairy nonsense 🙂
Yep, airy-fairy stuff just makes them mad. thanks for reading and commenting.
Very clever. I like your idea. Well crafted. Marg.
Thanks, Marg.
Sorchia, I wonder what someone will think if they accidentally see one of those trapped people in a piece of the mirror. This was both humorous and creepy. O_o Well written. 🙂 —Susan
The guys at the recycling center may never be the same =) Thank you for your kind comments.
I love that each tiny shard of glass has a tiny figure wanting out. The image is fantastic.
Thank you so much. I appreciate your kind words. Glad you enjoyed it.
You should save this one for Halloween & Walpurgis Nicht~you could scare people out of decades worth of growth

Thanks! That’s the reaction I was going for 🙂
I love the way you told this, especially the first two paragraphs, very well crafted.
Your story reminded me of one of my guilty pleasures – the TV series “Charmed” 🙂
Thank you so much. How did I miss “Charmed”? I’ll need to binge watch raise my cultural-intelligence score. Thanks for commenting–glad you liked it.

Dear Sorchia,
As the song goes, ‘when will they ever learn.’ There’s a witch who uses her head along with her broom. Well done.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thank you, Rochelle. She’s a feisty one, alright.
This is a great twist. Witches as quantum physicists, too. Curiouser and curiouser.
Aloha,
Doug
