“An Awareness of Evil” in Mystic Desire, an anthology of supernatural stories by authors of Black Velvet Seduction.
Have you ever been to a psychic? I lived many of my so-called “formative years” in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Not only is Virginia Beach home to fun in the sun and on the sand, but it also holds the A.R.E. or Edgar Cayce’s Association for Research and Enlightenment. Edgar Cayce is the most well-known psychic of the twentieth-century, renown for his holistic cures described while he was in a trance. I was fascinated by the A.R.E. when I lived at the Beach, and became even more so when hubby and I started dating. His mother was a student of what we now call New Age beliefs and readings. I heard about a psychic on an A.R.E. recommendation, and I saved my pennies to go and see her. Sadly, I was disappointed at her predictions. She didn’t say I was going to marry a rich man, travel a lot, or be deliriously happy in my old age. In fact, what she told me seemed to have nothing to do with me at all. Maybe if I’d been better prepared, I would have asked questions. But what did I know? I wasn’t a psychic!
A few years later, my appetite still whetted, I had a reading in Florida’s famed Cassadaga, a small town of psychics. There, my chosen seer told me that I was tied to a man who struggled with the books, who had to spend long hours studying, but who loved me. She said that once we committed to each other, we would be together forever. Turns out, my boyfriend—and eventual husband—has dyslexia and did indeed struggle with his college classes. And I don’t know about forever, but we have been together for over 46 years.
I give all this background to talk about Black Velvet Seduction’s supernatural anthology, Mystic Desire. It seems I’m still not over my fascination with psychics. In my story, “An Awareness of Evil,” Amanda McMasters first senses a young girl who is afraid, very afraid. In short order, her sense of the girl grows into a full-blown vision, with color and sound and even smell. Amanda feels she’s there with the girl—and she discovers something so horrid she can barely stand to share it with a local detective. Regardless of what Amanda tells Brendan Gilchrist, she doesn’t have enough information to help him find the girl. As her awareness of danger grows stronger, Amanda is nearly desperate to find the child. Can she and Brendan reach her before the evil does?
I’m so proud to be part of this anthology. The other authors are all at the top of their games. Not only that, I’ve found them to be friends and very supportive colleagues. It’s a great group!
Mystic Desire is available for 99 cents until October 1, the release date. Find it on Amazon Or use the Universal Buy Link.)

A few years ago, Dee S. Knight began writing, making getting up in the morning fun. During the day, her characters killed people, fell in love, became drunk with power, or sober with responsibility. And they had sex, lots of sex. Writing was so much fun Dee decided to keep at it. That’s how she spends her days. Her nights? Well, she’s lucky that her dream man, childhood sweetheart, and long-time hubby are all the same guy, and nights are their secret. Shame you’re not marrying a rich man! lol Maybe next time?
Great post and a lovely blog! I can’t wait to read this anthology!
Thank you, Brit! My mom always said it’s just as easy to fall in love with a rich man as a poor man. Can’t say if that’s true, but I’m in love with the man I have so I guess that’s good enough. 😉
Great blog post, thank you Sorchia and Dee, I very much enjoyed reading all about this new anthology, it sounds very entertaining. I am a big fan of Dee S Knight. I have loved all her stories. I can’t wait for the next one.
Thank you, Ric! And thanks for letting me be a part of this anthology!!
I went to a psychic in New York, with somewhat the same results. It wasn’t much about me, and I didn’t get much info on my future. I can’t wait to read your story Dee!!
Thanks, Annabel! I hope you enjoy it.
I love the psychic idea! Can’t wait to read the story and the others in the anthology. Only one sleep to go!
Yay! Woke up to my copy of Mystic Desire!! Can’t wait to read your story, Alice.
Greetings all!
An Awareness of Evil sounds like a fascinating story. I had a palm reading once verdict is still out whether she told me anything good. She said I’d inherit money 3 times. Not yet. Said I’d be married twice, I’m married 51 years to the same man. I’d have three children. Nope only two and I’m way too old to have any more.
Carol
Hmm. Sounds like the first psychic I went to! Hope you didn’t pay too much for the experience. Thanks, Carol!
Sorchia, thanks so much for hosting me today!
Nice post, Dee. The story sounds amazing. I’m looking forward to reading it. I think this anthology is going to have everything under the sun inside. Haha
Thank you, Patricia! I’m very proud to be part of this anthology with such great authors/friends!
I read an excerpt of “An Awareness of Evil” and you had me hooked. I can’t wait to read it and the other stories.
Congratulations on making 46 years! That is a wonderful testament to romance!
Thanks, Zia! I won’t say all 46 years have been fairy tale perfect, but… Well, shoot. Yes they have, lol!
Dee, Thanks for telling us about Mystic Desire. What a fantastic anthology for this time of year!
I’ve been part of many anthologies over the years, but I’m super proud to be part of this one. Thanks for letting me highlight it here.
Dee and Sorchia,
Nice blog. Dee, An Awareness of Evil sounds fascinating.
In my twenties I was working for the largest book chain in the country as a book buyer. A psychic that had a book coming out came to do a reading for the buying staff. I turned down the invite thinking at the time it could be the devil speaking through the psychic because wouldn’t he know everything about us just like God would. Hey, don’t laugh I was only in my mid-twenties.
Anyway I was dying to hear from my Aunt who had just passed away. I wanted to know if she was mad at me for not naming my first child after her, after telling her that I was going to do so. I would have, but unfortunately, my brother-in-law had their baby just before mine and name their child the same name. I was more than annoyed by that at the time because it was my name too. Lol.
So all my brave buyer friends went in to the psychic and during the group meeting with her she kept asking them all which one of you was supposed to name your baby after your Aunt. They all kept shaking their heads. Finally, the psychic said someone you work with, Aunt is here, and she wants her niece to know that it is okay that the baby wasn’t named after her. None of my buyer friends knew about that so when they told the rest of us what had happened during the reading, I knew the message was for me. I had to admit at the time I was comforted by that, as I had felt guilty for not using her name.
It’s funny because I now watch the, “Long Island Medium,”and several detective and haunting type shows that use a psychic and I am fascinated by them all. Like I said I can’t wait to read your story, Dee.
Callie
I had no idea Virginia Beach had that going on, and I’m there all the time! I will have to check it out.
Gibby,
Lucky you. I love Virginia Beach.
Callie
Next time you’re there you should visit the A.R.E. Right down on Atlantic, overlooking the ocean. When I was growing up, Virginia Beach was a much smaller, less traffic-y place!
Hi Dee,
I am waiting to get my paperback copy of Mystic Desire. Your story sounds fab. My knowledge of psychics is somewhat limited, so I’m hoping you can enlighten me a bit. Great interview!
Thank you, Suzanne! I’m kinda anticipating getting my grubby little hands on it, too! 😉
